Abstract

Abstract work is where I feel most free. I start without a plan — just colour, a brush, and whatever’s sitting in my head that morning — and I keep going until the shapes settle into something balanced and calm. Growing up working-class in Sheffield, art wasn’t really part of my world, so in a way I make these for the lad who’d never have set foot in a gallery. There’s no hidden meaning to decode here. If a piece slows your breathing for a second as you walk past it, then it’s done its job. That’s all I’m ever really chasing.
