Hugo North in his studio

The Artist

Hello, I’m Hugo

I’m a painter from Sheffield, working from a studio on the edge of the Peak District. I grew up working-class — raised among the valleys and the steel works, in a home without much art on the walls. That’s exactly why Hugo North exists: the art I came to love felt locked away in galleries, and the prints I could afford felt soulless. I wanted something in between — original, considered work, made properly, that real people could actually live with.

In the studio

The part I love most

Honestly, the making is the bit I’d never give up. There’s a point in every piece — brush loaded, the studio quiet, the radio low — where the second-guessing falls away and it’s just my hand and the paper. Hours vanish. That’s the feeling I’m chasing every time I start something new.

What sets it off is usually small and close to home — weather rolling over the Peaks, light shifting across a wall, the particular grey of a Sheffield morning, a single stem on the sill. I paint to hold those moments a little longer, and to work out what they mean to me.

The craft

Made properly

When you order, your piece is made just for you — printed to order as a fine-art giclée on 280gsm FineArt Paper or premium canvas, with pigment inks rated to last a lifetime, then hand-framed here in Britain.

It takes a little longer. I think you can feel the difference.

If a piece of mine ends up on your wall, thank you. It means more than you know.
