The Artist
Hello, I’m Hugo
I’m a painter from Sheffield, working from a studio on the edge of the Peak District. I grew up working-class — raised among the valleys and the steel works, in a home without much art on the walls. That’s exactly why Hugo North exists: the art I came to love felt locked away in galleries, and the prints I could afford felt soulless. I wanted something in between — original, considered work, made properly, that real people could actually live with.
Why I make this work
I paint the things that quiet my mind — weather, water, light through a window, the shapes a landscape leaves behind. Some days that means losing the subject entirely and chasing a feeling; other days it’s a single stem, drawn slowly.
Every piece begins by hand, here in the studio. Nothing is churned out and nothing is designed by committee — it’s just me, the work, and the northern light.

Made properly
When you order, your piece is made just for you — printed to order as a fine-art giclée on 310gsm archival cotton rag, with pigment inks rated to last a lifetime, then hand-framed here in Britain.
It takes a little longer. I think you can feel the difference.

“It’s just me, the work, and the northern light.”
If a piece of mine ends up on your wall — thank you. It means more than you know.
